3D printing

What are the most popular materials for 3D printing, and which tasks is each best for? What's the difference between PLA, ABS, and PETG, and which one should I start with?

I remember being totally lost when I started 3D printing—PLA was my first roll because it’s so forgiving, no heated bed needed, and it doesn’t smell. ABS is stronger and handles heat better but warps like crazy without an enclosure, so I’d skip it as a beginner. PETG sits in the middle: tougher than PLA, more flexible, and resistant to sunlight and moisture, but it can be stringy and loves to stick to your nozzle. For functional parts like brackets or outdoor stuff, PETG wins; for miniatures and display pieces, PLA is still king. I’ve bought some really detailed Premium 3d models for gaming figures, and PLA handled those fine. Just start with PLA, learn your machine, then experiment with PETG once you’re comfortable. ABS only if you really need heat resistance and have ventilation.
